Metra is the commuter rail system serving the Chicago metropolitan region, connecting downtown Chicago with surrounding suburbs across northeastern Illinois. I led a multi-phase process to support the modernization of Metra’s system across one of the nation’s largest commuter rail networks.
Our work began with a system-wide signage and brand audit, assessing conditions, consistency, and user experience across stations. This research was complemented by stakeholder workshops and public surveys, allowing us to gather insights from riders, staff, and community members to better understand navigational challenges and opportunities for improvement.
Drawing from these findings, we developed a set of recommendations and best practices aimed at creating a clearer, more cohesive wayfinding system—one that improves legibility, reinforces the Metra brand, and supports a wide range of riders across diverse station environments. The resulting report establishes a strategic framework for future implementation, balancing system-wide consistency with the flexibility required across Metra’s varied network.
The final phase of this effort focuses on translating strategy into action through the development of a standards manual and signage programming for Metra’s 240+ stations. This work lays the groundwork for scalable implementation, ensuring that future updates can be deployed efficiently while maintaining clarity, accessibility, and a unified visual language throughout the system.
